Duplicate contacts merge and retaining activity history

Hey everyone, had a question that I wasn't able to find the full answer to on here.  So when someone changes their email address in your CRM system (our main one isn't SFDC, but Personify), and they then get imported and a duplicate record is created, what's the best way to handle these.  In addition, say there is a bob@email.com who changes to robert@email.com...Bob has completed lots of forms, gone to landing pages, etc. and now we want to retain that history but for Robert, how can we do that while keeping all of the old data?  Or does it make more sense just to update the old record in Eloqua with the new email address?  We're just not sure how to go about handling this issue.  Any help or ideas would be great.  Thanks!
